the India Leather Fair
History of leather-making in Kursk region has deep roots. It can be explained by several reasons. First of all, Kursk land is situated on the Middle-Russian eminence, which had been penetrated by multiple trade roads, including famous “from Varangians to Greeks”. Secondly, we have all the necessary natural conditions – in the ancient times there was plenty of oak forests, and the oaken crust has been widely used in tanning. And the third reason is large water resources, demanded for the first stage of tanning. Up to the middle of the XIX century handicraft leather-making had developed in aggregation with shoe-making, but by the beginning of the XX century a large tanning industry has been formed in Kursk province. The largest according to the volume of production were the Lavrov’s, Salman’s and Zusman’s tanneries.

The plants were nationalized after the 1917’s revolution. At the end of the 20-s of the XX century the forming of one of the largest tanneries on the base of the Lavrov’s tannery (including the plants of the other owners) was started. Since 1928 the tannery bears the name of Seregin and plays the leading role in the industry up to the 70-s. November 16, 1972: a contract concluded by Italian firm “Cogolo-Borgoro” and Ministry of light industry of USSR on constructing a tannery in Kursk on the technological basis, worked out by Italian specialists. 1978: Kursk Tannery is put into operation.

It is rigged out by Italian, French and German equipment. Production capacity amounts to 300 million square decimeters of chrome leather and 40 million square decimeters of velvet split. 1979: Kursk Leather production Association is organized on the basis of Kursk Tannery. It consists of: Seregin’s Kursk Tannery, Raw-materials processing plant, Kuznetsov’s Ostrogozsk Tannery, Urazovsk Tannery, Shebekino Tannery “Red October”. Kursk Tannery is the head plant. 1986: Kursk and Gubkin shoe-factories joined the association. It is the birth of Kursk Scientific production Shoe and Leather Association. Crash of USSR leads to the destruction of many of administrative and economical links. This circumstance influenced negatively on the work of Kursk Tannery. It stops working in 1994. The production will be renewed only in 1997. 1999: Firm Kursk Leather is organized on the industrial basis of Kursk Tannery.
